Dane Andrew “Andy” Brandenberger, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026, in the comforting presence and compassionate care of Willow Tree Hospice.
Born on December 6, 1945, in Wilmington, Delaware, Andy lived a life marked by dedication, love, and service to others. Andy was the beloved son of Herman and Margaret Brandenberger.
He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Carla, in 2009, with whom he shared 44 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a beautiful life in Wilmington, Delaware, raising their two daughters, Shannan L. Brandenberger and Cary B. Riches.
A proud alumnus of Claymont High School, Class of 1963, Andy furthered his education at Elizabethtown College, where he not only earned a bachelor’s degree in education, was co-captain of the baseball team but met his beautiful wife Carla. Andy’s commitment to service extended beyond academia as he joined the United States Marine Corps, attending Officer Candidate School during college and then serving as a second lieutenant in the USMC Reserves. His thirst for knowledge and passion for teaching led him to pursue an MBA and a doctoral degree in education.
Andy dedicated 32 years of service to the State of Delaware, beginning his career with the Brandywine School District as a teacher, coach, and administrator. His leadership skills and dedication saw him rise to the role of Director of Facilities. Eventually, he and Carla moved to Milton, Delaware to serve the Cape Henlopen School District. At Cape he served as the CFO, Assistant Superintendent, and eventually Superintendent. He retired in 2005, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication.
An active member of his community, Andy was a Freemason and participated in numerous volunteer organizations, including the Lion’s Club and Rotary Club. His hobbies reflected his zest for life; he was an avid fisherman who found peace on the water and a skilled craftsman known affectionately as “Handy Andy” for his ability to fix anything. Most importantly, he loved and adored being “Grandpop” to Dane and Beau.
Andy’s quick wit and quiet demeanor endeared him to all who knew him. He was a thoughtful and caring man whose kindness extended beyond his family to everyone he encountered. His memory lives on through his daughters, Shannan and Cary, son-in-law Michael Riches, grandsons Dane and Beau Riches, sister and brother-in-law Gale and Gordon McAllister. Extended family sister and brother-in law Twila and William Flohr, Nieces: Wendy Carpenter, Katie Brower, Abigail duPont, Tessey Flohr and nephew Timothy McAllister.
A service to celebrate Andy’s life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 11:30 AM. A visitation with the family will be held from 10:00 AM-11:30 AM at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803.
If so inclined, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation in honor of Andy’s courageous battle with the disease.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Maris Grove and the caregivers from Willow Tree Hospice for their unwavering support and compassion during Andy’s final days.
