Hal Bruner, of Hockessin, DE, age 82, passed away on August 26, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Hal was born in Chester, PA, on his father’s 21st birthday, when his father was serving in the Pacific islands during World War II. For this reason, his family name is Chip or Chippy.
When his father returned from the war, Hal, his father, Harold, Sr., and mother, Ida (Leonard) Bruner, moved to Dover, DE, where he was raised. Hal graduated from Dover High School, earned a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Delaware, and finished his chemistry PhD. at the University of Illinois in Urbana, Ill., where he met his wife, Ruth.
Hal finished a one-year postdoc at UCLA and a 2nd one-year postdoc at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama, before starting his 30+ career with DuPont. While working at the Dupont Research Center in Wilmington, he was awarded a Chemmy award for Creativity and many patents. The analysts that worked for him said he was the best boss they ever had.
Hal thoroughly enjoyed bowling, traveling, fishing, bible study, archeology, astronomy, cooking, and creating stained glass projects.
Hal will be remembered for his steady presence, generous spirit, deep rooted faith, humor, and the many practical ways he showed his love. Hal is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth (Gilson) Bruner; his son, Michael Bruner; his siblings, David Bruner (Robin), Sharon Bruner, Lynn Boyer (Gerald); and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy, and his parents.
Hal was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church for over 40 years. A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 2800 Duncan Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, on Saturday, September 19, at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
Interment will be private at a future date.
