Mark Gordon Breton, 71, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on August 29, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, to Cecil Charles Breton and Florence Hoskin Breton, Mark grew up in New England and graduated from Barrington High School in Barrington, Rhode Island in 1973. He attended Gordon College for two years before transferring to Bryant University, where he earned a degree in accounting in 1978. He concluded his studies at Widener University, where he received his Masters of Business Administration.
After college, Mark moved to Wilmington, Delaware and began his career with Hercules Chemical. Not long afterward, he met Diane through a church ministry. They were married in 1981 and built their life and family together in Delaware. Mark and Diane enjoyed 45 years of marriage marked by his steadfast devotion, thoughtfulness, generosity, and loving acts of kindness large and small.
Mark was a follower of Jesus, a loving husband, a devoted father to his sons, Andrew and Chris, and a welcoming father to his two daughter-in-laws, Leah and Holly. He adored his grandchildren, Lake, Koda, and Ziya, and loved filling their time together with stories, silly games, and laughter. His family was at the center of his life. He had a quiet warmth and steadiness that drew people to him. Mark was someone people trusted, and knew he’d provide them with authentic conversation.
Mark had a successful career in consulting with KPMG, BearingPoint, and SAP. A gifted problem-solver, he was at his best when helping businesses work through difficult challenges. He worked hard to give his family every opportunity and experience he could. His generosity extended beyond his family through his faithful support of his church and many nonprofit organizations.
That desire to help showed up in nearly every part of Mark’s life. He always seemed to have a house project underway and was quick to join one of his sons’ projects - whether building a set for a homecoming dance, repairing something in their homes, or driving hours to help look at an old project car. For Mark, love meant showing up, lending a hand, and finding a way to make things work.
He loved the outdoors, especially lakes and mountains. Growing up in New England, he enjoyed skiing in the winter and water skiing in the summer, and those places remained special to him throughout his life. He also loved planning trips – sometimes almost as much as taking them. Traveling throughout the United States and around the world, gave him another way to create lasting memories with his family.
Mark was also an avid New England sports fan. He could talk at length about what the Celtics or Patriots were doing, and perhaps more importantly, what their front offices should be doing. He always had an opinion and was usually happy to share it.
Mark will be remembered for his steady presence, generous spirit, deep rooted faith, and the many practical ways he showed his love.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Diane; his sons, Andrew (Leah) and Chris (Holly); his grandchildren, Lake, Koda, and Ziya; his sister, Laurel Breton; his brother, Charles “Chuck” Breton; and many extended family members and friends who loved him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Brandywine Valley Church, 7 Mount Lebanon Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Visitation with the family will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service at the church.
