Elsie C Godwin, age 77, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026. Born on August 7, 1948, in Wilmington, DE, Elsie was the daughter of Elmer and Hazel Godwin.
Elsie spent 38 years working as an Account Specialist for the Canal District at DelDOT and the State of Delaware. She was also very proud when she earned her degree from Goldey- Beacom College after working several years to accomplish it while working full time.
Her hobbies included photography. It was rare when you didn’t see Elsie with a camera during family gatherings. She also liked to travel when she was able, which included a trip with her parents to Alaska where they drove from Newark, DE and back. Her most beloved hobby was genealogy research. She spent an enormous amount of time researching back into the 1600s and she would undoubtedly be called “The Family Historian”. This legacy will live on.
She is survived by her niece, Tammy (Scott) Hudson and Donald (Melissa) Godwin as well as other nephews, grandnieces/grandnephews, sister-in-law Maria Godwin, and cousin Carol Hollinger Buehler along with many other cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin sister Arlene Hazel, and brothers Elmer A Godwin and Allen B Godwin.
A viewing and celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. A viewing from 10-11am and the celebration of life beginning at 11am. at McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19808, with Pastor Don Post officiating. Burial will take place immediately afterward at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery, 525 Polly Drummond Hill Rd Newark, DE 19711.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 308 Possum Park Rd Newark, DE 19711 in Elsie’s memory.
