The world got a little quieter with the passing of Michael “Chick” Chicklo, a man known for his deep but soft voice, steady presence, and the kind of patience most people only dream of having. Chick didn’t need attention or applause to make an impact—he simply lived each day with kindness, loyalty, and a genuine appreciation for the people around him.
Chick is survived by Diane Chicklo, his best friend and the mother of his children; his son, Drew Chicklo; his daughter, Jennifer Chicklo; and his grandchildren, Angela Walmer and Colton Chicklo. He is also survived by his siblings Joan Moore, Diane Chicklo-Robbins, Joseph Chicklo, and Anthony Chicklo, along with many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy Pierce and Michael Chicklo, his daughter Erin Chicklo, and his nephew Brad Robbins.
Chick proudly served his country as a Marine and carried that honor throughout his life. Many knew Chick through his love of baseball. In the 1970s, he managed in the Delaware Semi-Pro Leagues, and in the 1990s he became a fixture in the West Wilmington Optimist Little League—coaching, mentoring, and cheering on not just his own kids but countless others. Baseball was more than a pastime to him; it was community.
He spent many hardworking years on the railroad in multiple roles, including brakeman, with Conrail (later Norfolk Southern). Chick retired after a long and respected career marked by reliability, camaraderie, and an unwavering work ethic.
Known for his gentle nature and quiet intelligence, Chick made friends effortlessly—despite being a man of few words. His broad knowledge impressed everyone around him, and those close to him often said he would have excelled on Jeopardy! if he had ever taken the chance. In his later years at Shipley Living, he became a cherished member of the community, even taking on the role of Santa Claus during the holiday season, bringing joy to residents and staff alike.
Michael “Chick” Chicklo will be remembered for his patience, compassion, and the warmth he brought into every room. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday January 20 from 10-11am with a memorial service beginning at 11 am at McCrery and Harra Funeral, 3710 Kirkwood Highway Wilmington 19808. Burial will be private.
