Filliben, Catherine

Catherine Filliben (nee Schlesselman), age 99, of Wilmington DE, passed away on August 25, 2025, peacefully in the comfort of her home. Born in Norwood PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Catherine Schlesselman (nee Christy). Her family were devout members of St Gabriel Church. She was predeceased by her siblings Mary Walters, Margaret Naylis, Anne Latini, John Schlesselman, Joseph Schlesselman, and Edward Schlesselman

Kate was a homemaker and the beloved wife of the late John F. Filliben and the loving mother of Mary Ann, John (Darlene), Joseph (deceased)(Teresa), Stephen (Joann), Ann Marie Carlozzi (Rob) and Dianne (deceased). Kate was the loving grandmother to her 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Kate and John were newlyweds for 43 years. John, a lifetime DuPont employee, whose work took him and their large family from Pennsylvania to North Carolina to Luxembourg back to North Carolina and finally settling in Wilmington DE. Always holding hands while crossing states and countries.

Kate enjoyed baking, making many cakes for friends and family celebrations; including weddings, birthdays, baptisms and confirmations. She loved bird watching and she was an avid reader, often reading a book per week until well into her late 90’s. She loved day trips with her sisters to Lancaster or just through the back roads. The “golden girls” drove past Joe Biden’s house so many times we expected a call from secret service. It was a sad day when she finally gave up her car at 97 years old. She lived her 99 years to the fullest. Her kindness and caring nature was infectious, bringing joy to everyone she came in contact with.

Kate’s family is very appreciative of the care she received from Visiting Angels and Compassionate Care Hospice.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing 5:00-7:00 PM Monday, September 1, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike Wilmington DE 19803 and Tuesday morning 10 – 10:45 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary, 4701 Weldin Rd., Wilmington, DE, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 111 Continental Drive Suite 407, Newark DE 19713 or Talleyville Fire Company, 3919 Concord Pike, Wilmington DE 19803.
